John JONES - Reverend
SARAH
"John matriculated sizar from Queens College, Cambridge, Michaelmas 1608 as
John "Johnes". He received his B.A. 1612/3; M.A. 1616; and was ordained deacon at
Peterboro, 19 Dec 1613. He probably was Rector of Abbot's Ripton, co. Huntington,
1619-1630, when he was deprived. The "Calendar of State Papers, Domestic
Series, of the Reign of Charles I" 4:275 (cited in TAG 71:52) tells: "1630 June 3:
Sentence of removal and suspension by the Court of High Commission against
John Jones, rector of Ripton Abbatt's, co. Huntingdon, for refusing to adhere to rites
and ceremonies in the book of public prayers."
John had children baptized at Abbot's Ripton parish 1621-1628. Three more
children were baptized 1631 to 1635 at St. Stephens, Coleman Street, London. His
presence there provides a link with Rev. John Danvenport, who was vicar of that
parish from 1624 to August 1633 when he left London after the appointment of
William Laud as Archbishop of Canterbury. John's marriage to Sarah and the birth
of their daughter Sarah had not been located when Hart wrote (published 1996).
He came on the Defence from London, arriving at Boston 3 October 1635, with wife
Sarah age 34, children Sarah 15, John 11, Ruth 7, Theophilus 3, Rebecca 2, and
Elizabeth 1/2. Savage notes that John's name was not on the passenger list nor in
the list at the custom house, "for good reason," and that the same was true for his
fellow-passenger Rev. Thomas Shepherd.
(Savage discusses at length the "common report" -- which he asserted to be
incorrect -- that Rev. John was the son of William Jones of Abergavenny in Co.
Monmouth, and entered Jesus College at Oxford in 1624 at age 17.)
Emma Lewis Sanford wrote: "Mather tells of a dangerous crossing, the ship
springing a leak in the first storm," and "It was supposed he came under an
assumed name as they wished him to stay in England." The Ackley/Bosworth
genealogy tells that Jones was entertained upon his arrival by Gov. Winthrop in his
Boston house.
Jones settled at Concord, MA with Rev. Peter Bulkeley. He was ordained pastor at
Concord 6 April 1637, and in 1644, removed with other Concord settlers to Fairfield.
Late in life he married (2) Susannah, a widow with a daughter whom Winthrop
referred to in 1663 as 'Mary Holsworth' aged 26, daughter of the wife of Mr. Jones,
Pastor of Fairfield. Susannah's daughter Mercy, as wife of Thomas Disbrow, was
the noted witch convicted at Fairfield in 1692, but fortunately reprieved and never
executed. A letter written in 1696 by Rev. Gershom Bulkeley to a nephew in Fairfield
calls her "Mercy Holbridge (now Disborough)," so she was evidently that Mercy
"Halbidge" baptized at New Haven on 30 June 1650.
His will was dated 17 January 1664/5; inventory was taken 9 February 1664/5. The
will gave to his wife Susanna the L50 he had promised her and made her Executrix.
He referred to L7 he owed the heirs of Capt. Cullick and named his children: John
Jones, Eliphalet Jones, Sarah Wilson, Widow; Ruth James, Rebecca Hull and
Elizabeth Hill."

John JONES - Reverend
SARAH
"Little is known of the history of the Rev. John Jones who became the
first minister of Fairfield, CT. in 1644. He had been educated and
regularlyordained a clergyman of the Church of England. He married in
England and had several children born there. He settled at Concord,
Mass. and on April 6, 1637 was ordained pastor of the Congregational
Church gathered there July 1636. At the same time Rev. Peter Buckley
was ordained teacher. Both gentlemen, before their ordination, were
called upon to renounce their Episcopal vows, and express regret that
they had ever been ministers in the Church of England. The feelings
of those who had been silenced for non-conformity, were in some cases
very bitter. Soon difficulty arose about the support of two ministers
& great dissatisfaction prevailed in the settlement in regard to
barren soil and marshy land. Many emigrated to other plantations and
as some turned their faces towards Fairfield, Mr. Jones resolved to
join them and "view the beautiful country" of which such glowing
accounts had been given him."

John JONES - Reverend
SARAH
"John Jones, (Rev.) was born in County Northampton, England, about 1593, and
died in Connecticut in January, 1664/5. Sarah _____ was born in England about
1601. They were married in England. She took the name Sarah Jones. They had
seven children:
i. Sarah Jones was born in England about 1620, and died in Connecticut in 1683.
ii. John Jones was born in England about 1624. He graduated from Harvard
College in 1643; was a preacher in Nevis, Bermuda. He died early.
iii. Ruth Jones was born in England about 1628. She married Thomas James,
(Rev.).
iv. Theophilus Jones was born in England about 1631. He died young in
Connecticut.
v. Rebecca Jones [#1309]: She was born in England about 1633.
vi. Elizabeth Jones was born in England about 1635. She was 6 months old when
the family sailed to America. She married William Hill.
vii. Eliphalet Jones was born in Concord, Massachusetts, on January 9, 1640/1, and
died in Huntington, Long Island, about 1732.
His second marriage was to Susanna _____. She was born about 1605 and
perhaps was the widow of Richard Hollingsworth of Salem. Her daughter, Mercy,
was tried for witchcraft in 1692.
John Jones matriculated sizar from Queens College, Cambridge, Michaelmas
1608, as John "Johnes"; B.A., 1612/13; M.A. 1616; ordained deacon at Peterboro,
December 19, 1613. He probably was rector of Abbot's Ripton, county Huntington,
1619–1630, when he was deprived—removed from his office.
He and his family sailed on Defence: his wife Sarah, age 34, and children Sarah 15,
John 11, RUTH 7, Theophilus 3, Rebecca 2, and Elizabeth 6 months. It was a
terrifying crossing; the ship sprung a leak during the first storm.
Upon his arrival, he was entertained by Governor Winthrop in his Boston house. He
settled in Concord, Massachusetts, with Rev. Peter Bulkeley.
Rev. Jones's will was dated January 17, 1664; his wife, Susanna, was the executrix.
It contained: ?50 that he promised his wife; he owed the heirs of Capt. Cullick ?7;
children listed: John Jones, Elaphalet Jones, Sarah Wilson (widow), Ruth James,
Rebecca Hull, and Elizabeth Hill. The overseers were Mr. Gold and Mr. Pell; the
inventory was dated February 9, 1664/5."

John Jones - Rev.
Sarah
"The details regarding Sarah's birth and their possible marriage in Wales as well
as John'sfather being William come from the LDS Ancestral File. I am now less
certain of illiambeing John's father, but leave the theory as food for thought. A
wealth of information is available in the January 1996 article "The Rev. John
Jones ofFairfield, Connecticut" by Frederick C. Hart, Jr., as published in The
American Genealogist(71:1). Some facts from that piece: John matriculated at
Queens College, Cambridge, England in 1608, received his B.A. inMarch 1611/12,
and his M.A. in 1616. He was pastor at Abbot's Ripton, Huntington,England from
at least 1621-1628, when his first six children were baptized there. Thenext three
were baptized in London at St. Stephens in Coleman Street, between October1631
and April 1635. The article has some interesting speculation on what John
wasdoing in London. In 1635 the family, except for Eliphalet who was not born yet,
arrived in Boston,Massachusetts, on the Defence. John was the first pastor of the
Congregational Churchof Fairfield, Connecticut. Sources: (other than census, if
