"Stephen JORDON was born about 1590.(5654) Based upon age during which he
became ineligible for military training (over 60 by 1650). He emigrated on 24 May
1634 to Boston, Massachusetts Bay Colony. (5655)(5656) (1639) (5657) Came in
the Mary and John which left Southampton, England 24 Mar 1633/34. He moved
before 1636 to Ipswich, Massachusetts Bay Colony. (5658) He was a Herd-keeper in
1645 in Ipswich, Essex, MA.(5659) He moved in 1653 to Newbury, Essex, MA.(5660)
He appeared in court in 1657.(5661) In this year, Stephen JORDAN and Robert
CROSS were both sued by Gov....... Bradstreet. He had previously entrusted them
with the care of 30 sheep. Their care seems to have been taken over by the sons of
Robert who were careless and may have allowed the death of many of the sheep. He
Granted house lot with 3 rods of ground on Stony Street; Granted planting lot next to
Robert CROSS before 1659 in Ipswich, Massachusetts Bay Colony.(5662) On this
date he sold the planting lot. He signed a will on 5 Apr 1667 in Newbury, Essex,
MA.(5663) (5664) He died on 8 Feb 1669 in Newbury, Essex, MA. (5665)(5666)
(5667) He died after taking sick. He became weak and unable to support himself.
Nether could he afford to pay for a nurse. His sons-in-law sent him food and cattle
upon hearing of his condition. The cattle were sold for £20. Savage says the date
was one year later, 1670. He left, according to his inventory, £39 total after 8 Feb
1669 in Ipswich, Essex, MA. (5668)

He married to Sarah/Susannah PEABODY? about 1616. According to Guilford, there
is a possibility that Stephen had another daughter named Joane, born 1619, who
arrived on the Abigail in 1635. Children were: Ann (Hannah) JORDON, Jane
JORDON.

He married to Susanna WILTERTON on 25 Jan 1653.(5669) Guilford says 25 Jan
1673 but I think she meant 1653."

"(Research):Hannah has been called by various researchers the daughter of
Stephen Jordan of Ipswich and Newbury, MA, by his wife, Susannah Wilterton, widow
of Nathaniel Merrill of Newbury. Fred Crowell, a Boston Genealogist, claimed
however (before 1944) that she was Stephen's sister. He believed that Hannah and
Stephen, and Robert Cross were all about the same age. But the will of Stephen
Jordan (Essex Probate Record, Vol. II, p. 187) dated 5 Apr 1667, mentioned his
daughter Cross and his daughter Andrews. He later makes a bequeath to 'Stephen
Cross, the son of Robert Cross my son-in-law,' and then later says 'to my two sons,'
Robert Cross and John Andrews.

The will is excerpted in A.E. Goodman's 'Goodman, A Family History,' p. 69. It is also
quoted in 'Lieut. John Andrews of Chebacco, Mass, 1637-1708,' by the
Hon. H. F. Andrews, (NEHGS) and he writes:

'Stephen Jordan came in the Mary and John in the company of Rev. Thomas Parker
from Wiltshire, Eng., which sailed from Southampton ___ Mar 1634 and arrived at
Boston May 24 1634' (Banks in his 'Planters of the Commonwealth' however, says
that the ship sailed on 24 May 1634, and that 'the time of her arrival is not recorded.) '.
. . his daughter, Jane, married Lieut. John Andrews, and another daughter, Hannah,
married Robert Cross of Chebacco. It is probably he was first married before coming
to this country, but nothing has been found relative to the mother of his children. He
settled at Ipswich, MA where he was proprietor, 1636, herd keeper, 1645, sold his
land at Ipswich, 1653, and moved to Newbury. Married Susannah, widow of
Nathaniel Merrill of Newbury, presumably his second wife, but not the mother of his
children. He died in Newbury 8 Feb 1669.'

"Stephen Jordan came to America in March, 1633/4, in the ship Mary and John, and
settled in Ipswich. He removed after 1649 to Newbury. The date of his removal was
probably about 1653, in which year he sold land in Ipswich. He died in Newbury 8
Feb. 1669/70. Susanna Jordan died 15 Jan. 1672/3, in Newbury, administration on
her estate being granted to her son Abel Merrill. Stephen Jordan had two daughters
by a prior marriage. They had married, in Ipswich, Robert Cross and John Andrews
respectively. It is supposed that no children were born to Stephen and Susanna
Jordan, none being mentioned in the settlement of the estate of either"
