"Deb,
While Durrell also provides some general information as to the
whereabouts of "Klaber" (original Germanic version before it was
American-ized), I can also confirm that Herman von Klaber -- as well
as
Ludwig, I believe -- "basically" originated from the Hamburg and
Salzburg areas of Germany.
This information is provided based on a book that the
Emmanuel/Clyde E. /Stephen C./Philip S. (that's me!) side of the
Clappers have entitled "The Clappers in America," published in
1980/1. I don't have the document immediately available, but can
provide further information if requested.
I'm also going to see if I can't find a place on genealogy.com for a
complete family tree to be posted ("Clappers in America" is about 2
inches thick!). I hope this helps,

Klapper
"German and Jewish (Ashkenazic): from an agent derivative of Middle
High German klappern ‘chatter’, ‘rattle’, hence a nickname for a
talkative
person or a gossip or a metonymic occupational name for a night
watchman, a reference to the clapper used for making
announcements. As a Jewish name it could be a metonymic
occupational name for someone who called people to the
synagogue".
