Postcard view of "Theatrical District, Broad Street, Richmond, Virginia"
8th & Broad Streets, Richmond, Virginia

'View shows street scene with at least two Cinemas and one other theater of
some type visible. On street are three streetcars, two automobiles, and people, in
the style of 1920s.
A historic postcard showing electric-powered trolley streetcars in Richmond,
Virginia, the city where Frank J. Sprague successfully demonstrated his new
system on the hills in 1888. Of course the streetcars shown here are those of two
generations later, of the type mass produced and seen in cities throughout North
America. Looks like Perely Thomas cars.
The cinema is showing "To the Last Man". From the automobiles and women's
fashion and other period details, this is almost certainly the silent version
released in September 1923 rather than the 1930 or 1933 remake.
Date Photo probably late 1923; see note above.

Maurice Smith
Elizabeth Bird
"Elizabeth Bird married Maurice Smith of King and Queen County. On Nov. 21, 1721 Elizabeth
Smith of King and Queen County appointed Richard Tunstall of Essex County as her attorney.
John Byrd was a witness and rendered oath. The husband mentioned by Elizabeth is Maurice
Smith and there is a Samuel Smith. John Byrd witnesses two following indentures involving
Elizabeth Smith.

Note: The John Bird is probably the brother of Elizabeth (Bird) Smith. The document referred to
in this Nov. 21, 1721 record was probably the Deed where Maurice and Samuel Smith
exchanged land. Elizabeth, living in King and Queen County, was appointing Richard Tunstall
to act as her attorney for the dower release.

Essex Co. Deeds
18 Nov. 1721 Elizabeth Smith of King & Queen Co. appoints Richard Tunstall of Essex Co. her
attorney to relinquich right of dower in 150 acres sold by husband Maurice Smith to Samuel
Smith. Wit. John Byrd, Joseph Patteson.

18-17 [sic] Nov. Maurice Smith of King & Queen Co. to Samuel Smith of Essex - lease &
release of 150 acres in Middlesex Co., tract given to Maurice & Samuel by last will of Maurice
Cock of Middlesex, dec. Wit. John Byrd, Joseph Patteson."

Maurice Smith
"John Smith's wife Mary Beverly Chew remarried to Oliver Towles, not to Thomas Towles.
Thomas Towles married the Mary B. Smith who was a DAUGHTER of John
and Mary Beverly (Chew) Smith. Also, the Maurice Smith who married the widow Catherine
Jones was a son of John Smith and his wife Ann Smith (who was John's
neighbor...we do not know if this neighboring Smith family was related or not). This John Smith
who married Ann Smith was a son of Lt. John Smith and his wife Jane
Cocke, and hence, a grandson of Alexander Smith (died 1690s in Middlesex Co., VA). The
OLDER Maurice Smith who married Elizabeth (supposedly Elizabeth Bird) was
also a son of Lt. John Smith and Jane Cocke (so it was two different Maurice Smiths who
married Elizabeth and Catherine....by the way, Catherine Jones was the widow
of a Humphrey Jones)."

"Virginia Colonial Abstracts by Beverley Fleet. GEN 929.3 V. 817a. Vols 2
Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc., Baltimore, MD 1998 p. 238. 1705. Petition of William Bird,
Robert Bird, Ralph Bowker, and William Holcomb, James Baughon, Richard Covington,
shewth-to take up 8,000 acs. Some part in the fork of Mattopony River above the land of Colo.
Augustine Warners they being ready to comply with the laws.

Colonial Caroline, A History of Caroline Co., VA by T. E. Campbell, GEN 929.3 755362 Camp
p. 25, William Byrd, the Frontiersman. In 1702, they elected and sent to the
House of Burgesses, a man who refused to take the oath of allegiance to England, and when
the Burgesses under pressure from the Royal Governor and Council, expelled him from
membership in their body, the ackwoodsmen received him as a hero when he returned to his
home in the wilderness, although, he left Williamsburg in disgrace. This man was William
Byrd or Bird, known as William Byrd, the Frontiersman, to distinguish him from his
contemporaries, the William Byrds of Westover,..." Col. William Leigh, Commander of the
militia in King and Queen, was appointed to investigate. He filed with both the Council and the
House of Burgesses, a report charging "that one William Byrd, a Burgessee from the county of
King and Queen did publish and spread abroad, seditious and scandalous reports, highly
reflecting on her Majesty, the Queen, the Royal Governor in Virginia, his Council, and the
House of Burgesses, tending to raise sedition in the minds of her loving subjects.". Byrd was
ordered to take the oath of allegiance to the Queen. But Byrd refused, and the Burgesses in
exasperation expelled him from their membership...He was summoned to Williamsburg to
answer charges, but the hearings came to naught. The Petition of 1706 for a crown grant of
8,000 acres in the great fork of the Mattapony was granted by the Governor, provided that Byrd
and his associates take up residence on this land at once. The great fork of the Mattapony lay
beyond the frontier. It seems that the governor sought to send Byrd to a region where anti-
royalist talk did no harm. p. 45, "Shortly before the Beverly grant, William Byrd, the
frontiersman, and his associates moved into the great fork of the Mattapony, and these three
widely separated settlements (Beverley's sub-grantees eastward from the present- day site of
Morris' Bridge, Collins in the region that is now Penola, and Byrd's party between the Matta and
Pony) appear to be the only instances of white people living on Caroline soil south of the
Mattapony, until after Spotswood made his treaty with the Indians, which freed all Virginia east
of the Blue Ridge from raids by the Iroquois."
