BEAUMONT - LINE 1

St Andrew's Church
"Folkingham Church is a notable feature of the village
when coming down the hill but still seems tucked
away within the Market Place. It is not known when the
church was built, but some say it to be between the
14th and 15th Century."

Beaumont

fought at Battle of Bannockburn, 24 June 1314[3]:
' Gloucester, with the van, entered the park, where he was met, as we
shall see, and Clifford, Beaumont, and Sir Thomas Grey, with three
hundred horsemen, skirted the wood where Randolph was posted, a clear
way lying before them to the castle of Stirling. Bruce had seen this
movement, and told Randolph that "a rose of his chaplet was fallen,"
the phrase attesting the King's love of chivalrous romance. To pursue
horsemen with infantry seemed vain enough; but Randolph moved out of
cover, thinking perhaps that knights adventurous would refuse no
chance to fight. If this was his thought, he reckoned well.
Beaumont cried to his knights, "Give ground, leave them fair
field." Grey hinted that the Scots were in too great force, and
Beaumont answered, "If you fear, fly!" "Sir," said Sir Thomas, "for
fear I fly not this day!" and so spurred in between Beaumont and
D'Eyncourt and galloped on the spears. D'Eyncourt was slain, Grey was
unhorsed and taken. ' [Andrew Lang[4] ]

Hubert de Beaumont
"Hubert II de Beaumont-au-Maine, called Hubert de Sainte-Suzanne, is a Viscount
Beaumont and Maine then Vendome, holding at the XI century, the seat of
Beaumont, Fresnay and Sainte-Suzanne.
The family of Beaumont, and Beaumont-Brienne, dominated this region of Maine in
the tenth century to the fourteenth century.

Hubert, son of Raoul V de Beaumont and of Emma Montreveau, was probably
named after Hubert, bishop of Angers, his great-uncle, so devoted to the interests
of his niece.
It is called alternately Vicomte de Sainte-Suzanne,
of Lude, of Maine, Manceaux, Le Mans.
cour. During the life of Cana, the second wife of his father, he told his son, and
always called Viscountess it is the judge of his court.

Né vers 1047 , le vicomte Hubert avait épousé, le 6 décembre 1067 , Ermengarde
de Nevers [ 1 ] , fille de Guillaume Ier de Nevers , (° 1029 † 1083 ), comte de
Nevers Born around 1047, Viscount Hubert were married on December 6 1067,
Ermengarde de Nevers [1], daughter of William I of Nevers (b. 1029 † 1083), Count
of Nevers Blason comte fr Nevers.svg , et d'Ermengarde de Tonnerre. , And
Ermengarde of Tonnerre.
This lady
is quoted with her husband, particularly in the confirmation to St. Aubin in the
chapel of Saint-Aubin du Lude, about 1090, and in the gift of St. Flaceau at the
Abbey of St. Vincent.

couvents. With her daughter Godeheult [2], future abbess of Étival she frequented
the monasteries.
bois. An Easter Day, having come to Cellières she gave to the prior, Henry of
Champeaux, hunting rights in his forest, and later for Christmas, she conceded to
the prior of Cheffes, Geoffroy de Nantes, charges in woods.
There are, on the date of 28
December 1135, a Viscountess Ermengarde, wife of Walter Hart, Viscount Mollan
that dom Guilloreau supposed to be the Viscountess of Maine, if later remarried
and still living aged 90 years or more. Cela paraît peu vraisemblable et
demanderait des preuves. This seems unlikely and would require evidence.

Hubert had five children:

1. Raoul , (fils aîné ?). Raoul, (eldest son?).
Herbert or
Hubert (b. 1062) quoted with his brothers and his mother in 1090 and again in
1095 and in other cases less accurate.
3. Guillaume (° 1061 ), mentionné aussi deux fois. William (b. 1061), also
mentioned twice.
Denis, who appeared in
only one circumstance.
d'Angers . Godeheult [2], (b. 1063), religious of Cluny [3], who was visiting his
mother with the Benedictines, who sang at the Priory Cheffes with monks
alléluiatique verse, was not, as we said, professed at the Abbey Ronceray Angers.
The two charters which mentioned a nun of the name applied to his
aunt, one for his profession before 1067, the other at the end of his career after
When
Raoul VII founded the prayer of St. Alleaume, the abbey Étival-in-Charnie, he called
his sister Godeheult [2] as abbess in 1109.
His name is lost in
darkness of an order emerging and still very modest.

The Maine, during the XI century, is the subject of envy from neighbors, the Anjou,
south, and Normandy in the north.
In 1058, Count Herbert II du Maine, without children, recognizes a vassal of William
of Normandy and made him his heir.
But many lords
of Maine did not hear well and take up arms against the Normans.
Around
1063, says Orderic Vital, Hubert de Beaumont held Mans against the Normans.
Ten years later, he is obliged to comply, leaving the winner of its castles Fresnay
and Beaumont, and follow him but is preparing for his revenge.
It then builds or occupies his castle of Sainte-Suzanne, situated on a hillock
unaffordable, the ammunition of the dungeon which has withstood so many
enemies, the elements and time, it encloses and is anxious until the Mans
supporters of William.
In a new invasion, after taking possession of places that were on his way to
Fresnay at Sille and Beaumont, less easy to defend, attack William Castle Sainte-
Suzanne (Mayenne), but faces the fierce resistance of Viscount Hubert II, Vicomte
de Beaumont-au-Maine, and Fresnay Sainte-Suzanne - whose wife Ermengarde of
Nevers is the great-great granddaughter of Hugh Capet -.
Hubert retreated to its powerful tower of Sainte-Suzanne with his family and his
best soldiers.
From 1083 to 1086, Sainte-Suzanne is the place of confrontation between Viscount
Hubert and the Duke of Normandy and king of England, William the Conqueror. Si
If William
himself back in Normandy (his wife, Matilda of Flanders, died November 3 1083),
he entrusts the command headquarters to one of his trusted assistants, Breton
Alain Roux, Lord of Richmond, and installs a fortified camp, topped with a large
garrison, Camp Beugy.
The best knights come from the provinces of France, notably Aquitaine and
Burgundy, to support Hubert against the Normans and English, and enriched by
intercepting and ransoming the enemy knights.
Robert of Old Bridge (also present at Hastings), Robert of Ussi and other Norman
knights of high rank were killed. Le 18 novembre 1085 , is Richer de L'Aigle, son of
Engenoulf the Eagle, who also died at Sainte-Suzanne, an arrow in the eye, having
forgiven the young man who the reached.
Richer's brother, Gilbert, Duke of Eagle, and several other Norman knights (William
of Warenne, Bauldri of Quitri) assemble an army to avenge Richer de L'Aigle and
deliver the assault, but "they only won that the iron sank into their wounds.
The king could not besiege the fortress, which was inaccessible because of rocks
and the thick vines that surrounded on all sides," recounts Orderic Vital, the most
comprehensive chroniclers of the time, and whose father had accompanied
William in the conquest of England.
In fact, the castle is built on a rocky and steep
slopes (covered with vines) make them very dangerous attacks, in addition, many
wells operated inside the fortress, and then a tunnel connecting the castle in the
"mill Viscount" (now Major-mill), can refuel properly besieged.
"In a noble example, worthy of a prominent and renowned for his courage and
audacity," by William Hubert harassing numerous incursions into the garrisons of
Normandy and the war bogged down. Guillaume, comte d'Evreux ( 1067 - 1118 ), is
taken prisoner.
Machiel of Guitot, son of
Godfrey-le-Petit, was mortally wounded, and the besiegers wipe repeated failures
and serious.
"As they could not prevail over Hubert nor value, nor happiness, having changed his
mind and resolution, they tried to make it fit into the alliance of the King. Hubert y
Henderson agrees, and William the Conqueror is suitable, discouraged by the
death of many knights and faithful companions in arms (among other Hervé (or
Anvrai) the Briton, who succeeded Alan Rufus as commander of headquarters) . A
treaty, given as the date for another event, took place from MAy 23 1085 to April 21
1086
The seat is lifted, William received a friendly England defender Sainte-Suzanne, it
makes its areas of Beaumont and Frenay, and therefore remains on good terms
with him. Guillaume - William died in Rouen September 9 1087
We find from Hubert, with Robert the Burgundian his uncle, who threatens to
demolish the Castle of Lude but already good family in 1090.
The
lifetime of his father, he had confirmed with him to abbeys legacy of his ancestors.
He repeated these actions when he
had the burden to Viscount St. Vincent, St. Aubin Marmoutier especially the Lude.
Probably because of its title vicomtal
he attended a donation to the church and rectory Bazougers in St. Vincent.
He died before 24 May 1095, according to Dr. Robert Latouche
Epilogue
Sainte-Suzanne, the only castle that William the Conqueror was never able to take,
is cited as such in the History of England ( "St.Suzanne, the one castle Which the
Conqueror himself could never take ")... Mais l'inimitié fut passagère : But the feud
was transient:
The small-son of Hubert, Roscelin de Beaumont-au-Maine, married Constance
FitzRoy, daughter of Henry I "Beauclerc" King of England (in 1068 - 1,135), the latter
being the youngest son of William the Conqueror.
The son of Roscelin and Constance, Richard I de Beaumont de Beaumont-au-
Maine, wife Lucie de l'Aigle, great granddaughter of the Eagle Richer killed by
Sainte-Suzanne Hubert troops in 1085.
married September 5 1186 with William I of Scotland (v 1143 - 1214), king of
Scotland from 1165 to 1214.
Hubert II Vive!
A song in praise of Hubert II was written in the early twentieth century by Amand
Dagnet ( "Sainte-Suzanne, songs, Imp. Goupil, Laval, 1929)"

Raoul V de Beaumont - Roscelin
Emma Montreveau - Lady Lude
"Raoul V or Roscelin, son of Raoul IV de Beaumont and Hildegarde, faithful Nerra
Fulk said Celestin Port would have won with him Mauges would fortified Grand
Montreveau
he would have held still for the Count of Anjou in 1065 however, if in the latter case
it is not Raoul Payen to St. Sergius one of Luché at Saint Aubin approved as
suzerain many donations from other churches: Noyen, Montreuil Saint-Longis, St.
Vincent played etc.. In 1047 with Raoul, his son, he purchased the gift of a serf to
the Abbey of Bourgueil.
But his main work was the foundation of the priory Vivoin around 1060 near his
castle of Beaumont. This proximity and the title of founder gave the opportunity to
take Viscounts in the convent of licenses very incompatible with monastic life. On
the verge of death, Raoul, visited by the canons of Saint-Julien, the monks and the
prior Tetbert, skilled doctor, said he had not granted to other religious that he had
given previously and Marmoutier the Priory Vivoin. Il mourut en 1067 . He died in
1067."

Raoul III de Beaumont
Godeheult
"Raoul III was the brother of the bishop of Le Mans Mainard, who had been married,
the father of many children and had borne arms before aspiring to the bishopric he
held from 951 to 971. The chroniclers, naming the father of the Bishop, we have
therefore made the name of Viscount.. They have not done. . Raoul III subscribed by
957 and 971 two acts of the Count of Maine, Hugh II of Maine, for the Abbey of Saint-
Julien de Tours: the concession of the freehold of Tait and field Vaubouan
L 'Abbe Angot it was established in 985 - 989 the restorer of the abbey of Evron.
They wanted to rob him this honor on behalf of the Vicomte de Blois, but though the
attempt is successful, the fact is against all probability and contradicted by
numerous monuments. That's the Viscounts of Maine that we must keep to the
bold Evron, such as Sainte-Suzanne, Thorigné of Courtaliéru.
Raoul III is quoted in 990 with his son Geoffrey in the donation of the Ford-
Bernisson to the Couture, presumably at least, in 994 for the concession and fair
markets by Count Hugh II of Maine to the abbey of Evron ; witness, Frenay, two
charters for the Mont-Saint-Michel and Yves given by Guy on August 12 997. He
went to Rome to be confirmed by Pope John XVI, his founding of Evron, very old and
lived after 1003. In his later years he gave two Colibert to Saint-Florent de Saumur,
and attended the donation by Guy, son of Lon, duties on road. Performed at the
Abbey of La Couture
Raoul III, brother of Bishop Mainard, is allied to three successive bishops of Le
Mans, when they were at the same time as prelates, powerful lords temporal"
