File:Normandie Eure Harcourt tango7174.jpg - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia:
14:48, 20 May 2009      Tango7174

"The House of Harcourt are a Norman family, descended from the Viking Bernard the Dane and
named after its seigneurie of Harcourt in Normandy. Its mottos were "Gesta verbis praeveniant"
(Olonde branch), "Gesta verbis praevenient" (Beuvron branch), and "Le bon temps viendra ... de
France" (English branch).
In 1280 they established the Collège d'Harcourt in Paris, now the Lycée Saint-Louis at 44 boulevard
Saint-Michel.
When in 911 the Viking chief Rollo obtained the territories that would make up Normandy through
the Treaty of Saint Clair-sur-Epte, he distributed domains to his main supporters among those who
had accompanied him on his expeditions against the English and the Neustrians. After the
conquest of Normandy, considerable lands (notably the seigneurie of Harcourt, near Brionne, were
granted to Bernard the Dane as a reward for his exploits, and from him they descended upon the
lords (seigneurs) of Harcourt.
The Harcourt family has been perpetuated up until the present day in a French branch and an
English branch. The château d'Harcourt in Harcourt (Normandy), built around 1100, survives.
In the 11th century, Errand of Harcourt and his three brothers followed William the Conqueror, duke
of Normandy, on the Norman invasion of England, and the brothers were installed with English
lands. The English Harcourt branch entered the English peerage, as barons then viscounts then
earls. At first the Harcourts had lands in Leicestershire, but in 1191 Robert de Harcourt of Bosworth
inherited lands of his father-in-law at Stanton in Oxfordshire, which then became known as Stanton
Harcourt.[1] The manor of Stanton Harcourt has remained in the Harcourt family to the present day,
although from 1756 to 1948 their main residence was at Nuneham House, also in Oxfordshire.
Simon Harcourt was created Baron Harcourt in 1711 and Viscount Harcourt in 1721. The third
viscount was created Earl Harcourt in 1749, but all titles were extinguished with the death of
marshal William Harcourt, 3rd Earl Harcourt, in 1830. His cousin Edward Vernon, Archbishop of
York, thus inherited the majority of that branch's lands and titles and took the name and heraldic
shield of the English Harcourt family by royal authorisation on 15 January 1831. This created the
Vernon-Harcourt branch, descended from a Harcourt woman. The title Viscount Harcourt was
created a second time in 1917 for Lewis Harcourt, but the title was again extinguished on the death
of his son.

As well as this branch, the English Harcourt family also descends from the older line of the
Harcourts of Ankerwycke
In France, Errand of Harcourt's brother, Robert I of Harcourt, sire of Harcourt, continued the Harcourt
line in France. His descendents are sub-divided into several branches, with the two principal ones
being the Olonde and Beuvron branches, which both descend to this day. The Harcourt family of
France intermarried with other members of the French aristocracy, including the de Livet family.[2]

The Beuvron branch includes several marshals of France and lieutenant generals of the ancien
regime royal armies.
Bernard the Dane, compagnon of Rollo, gouvernor and regent of the duchy of Normandy until the
death of William I of Normandy (942)
Torf, baron of Tourville, son of Bernard le Danois and of Sprote, princess of Bourgogne.
Turquetil (960 - 1020s), son of Torf and of Ertemberge of Briquebec. William the Conqueror's
governor during his minority."

William Beaumont
Marguerite De Chabot Petit
"The ancestry that I have for Alice is somewhat speculative at this time. Most people on World
Connect have her as descendant of two William Beaumonts, born abt 1170 and 1215
respectively. Other than these two, I find no other referencesto William Beaumonts in Southwest
England. I then stumbled on some people named William de Wigornia, who it turned out were
son and grandson of Robert Beaumont/Bellomonte Count of Meulan, born abt 1173 and 1215
respectively. They wereof Ayshe Manor, South Tawton (near Okehampton), Devonshire. Their
mother/grandmother was Maud FitzRoy of Launceston, Cornwall. Just outside of Launceston lies
the little village of St Giles on the Heath, Devonshire where the Cary family supposedly began
(They had a manor there in 1325, but supposedly were there even before they were in Castle
Cary).
Robert Beaumont's father was Waleran,Count of Meulan & Earl of Worcester; his great
grandfather was Roger, the original Norman Beaumont invader, who held extensive lands in
1086 in Sturminster Marshal, Dorsetshire which is a short distance from Castle Cary, Somerest.
Under William Beaumont/Wigornia born abt 1173 is a complete set of notes about the lands held
by the elder William and how he came by them.
I am currently looking for information on any land transfers or other information which would tie
this together.

Copied from World Wykes Website, www.wykes.org/devonwil.html:
--------------------------------- ----------------------------------------- -----
The following text is taken from Charles Worthy's Devonshire Wills, published in 1896.

In 1086, the manors of South Tawton with Ash, Wray, in Moreton Hampstead, and Cheverstone,
in Kenton (I am adopting modern spelling), all ofwhich save Ash, had belonged to the family of
Harold, were alike held, in demesne, by King William. Wray and Cheverstone were subsequently
owned by a family long known as de Cheverstone; whilst North Wyke, in South Tawton, said by
Risdon, with an anachronism as to date, "to have been anciently the lande of Williamde Wigoren,
alias Chamberlain," was for several generations, subsequently to 1242, held by the De Wrays of
Northwyke, otherwise North Wigorn.

It appears to me as certain that this William de Wigornia, rather than "Wigoren," was not only the
common ancestor of the Wrays, Cheverstones, and Wykes, but that he alsogave name to the
several properties in South Tawton, afterwards corrupted intoWest-wyke, Week-Town, or "
Wiggaton," and Northwyke, neither of which seem to be identical with the Domesday manors
known as " Wic," or " Wice," the Saxon equivalent for a hamlet, from the verb, vichian, which
signifies to reside or dwell; hence we get Prancras-wick, Germans-wick, Wick Dabernon, Great
Wick, and many other parishes, towns, and manors, in this and other parts of the country.

But in Devonshire there are only "Wykes," thus written, in the parishes of South Tawton and
Axminster; and North Wyke, in the latter parish, is also not a Domesday manor, but takes name
from an adjacent property, long known as Wigost.

There is every reason to assume that "William de Wigornia", gave his name toNorth and West
Wyke, and to Wiggaton, in the parish of South Tawton. He was certainly the ancestor of the
Wykes, and was also the owner of Wray, in Moreton Hampstead, and of Cheverstone, in Kenton,
and seems to have been one of the younger sons of Robert de Bellomonte, Earl of Mellent, and
dejure, Earl of Worcester, by his marriage with Maud, daughter and coheir of Reginald, Earl of
Cornwall. Hence he was known as "de Wigornia," in English, William of Worcester. The whole of
the South Tawton property I have mentioned came into the hands of Henry I upon the death of his
brother, William Rufus, in the year 1100. King Henry, by Elizabeth, daughter of Robert de
Bellomonte, Earl of Leicester, had with other left-handed issue, the aforesaid Reginald, Earl of
Cornwall [Note: I have Sibyl Corbet as mother of Reginald], possibly, and a daughter, Constance,
certainly, to whom he gave the whole of the manor of South Tawton, upon her marriage with
Rosceline, Viscount de Bellomonte, and it is shown, by the Pipe Rolls, thatshe received the rents,
etc., etc., in 1157.

Therefore, Elizabeth de Bellomonte was, in such case, not only the mother of the lady of the
manor of South Tawton, but she was also the aunt of Robert of Worcester, Earl of Mellent, the
husband of her granddaughter, Maud of Cornwall, and both the great-grandmother and the
great-aunt of "William de Wigornia," who doubtless obtained, primarily, the Royal manors of Wray
and Cheverstone, through his frail relative's connection with royalty, and the Wyke estates,
subsequently, by arrangement with his cousin, Richard de Bellomonte, who succeeded his
mother at South Tawton after 1157. This Richard had no male issue; his daughter and heir,
Constance de Bellomonte, married Roger de Toni about the year 1162, and the ultimate heir of
de Tonibrought the Devonshire property to Guy Beauchamp, Earl of Warwick, who died in1315.
The latter was maternally descended from Henry de Bellomonte, alias de Newburgh, brother of
the first Earl of Leicester, and therefore uncle of the first Earl of Mellent and Worcester, as well as
of E"

Father: Torf "The Rich" De HARCOURT
Ertemberge De BRIOQUEBEC
"He was a great Norman feudal baron. Probably he was a grandson of one of the viking chiefs of
Scandinavia who accompanied Rollo about 900 A.D. in the Norse invasion of northern France
where they permanently settled and gave to the country its name "Normandy". Torf possessed
numerous lordships in Normandy, being Seigneur de Torville, Torcy, Torny, Torly, du
Ponteautord, etc. It has been suggested that he was a son of Bernard the Dane, the most
powerful of the feudal nobles of Normandy during the reign of Duke William I. (927-943) and
Regent during the minority of Duke Richard I. (943-955); but this claim has not been
proved. Some genealogies show his parents as Bernard of Saxony and Spriota de Bourgogne,
but this is most certainly fabricated. - Todd Farmerie"

Main entrance of the Lycée Saint-Louis, Paris VIe.
Caerbannog   6 dec 2007 wikipedia

History: the Collège d'Harcourt

Until 1820, the lycée Saint-Louis was named Collège d'Harcourt.[1] At the time of its founding it was meant to be a residence for students of the University of Paris. The latter was founded in 1280 by Robert and Raoul d'Harcourt to offer food and lodgings to some forty impoverished students. It was not originally a teaching establishment, but this became an increasingly important part of its function over the years.
In the 18th century, it was a stronghold of Jansenists and produced several of the philosophes and Encyclopédistes.
The original building was demolished in 1795 and the present one erected on its site in 1814.
In the course of the 19th century, the lycée was successively a prison, barracks and reformatory."
