Robert CROSS
Anna Jordan
"ROBERT CROSS
Given Name: ROBERT
Surname: CROSS
Sex: M
Birth: 25-jun-1613 in Denham, Co. Suffolk, England 1
Death: 8-feb-1696 in Ipswich, Essex Co., MA 2
Baptism: 26-jun-1613 Denham, Co. Suffolk, England
Christening: 1634 "Mary and John" 1
Occupation: Yoeman
Note:
Robert served in the Pequot War, and as a result was granted six acres of marsh in
1639. (Great Migration 1634-'45) By tradition, he was a famous warrior and and was
knighted by Queen Elizabeth. So strong was this tradition that General Ralph Cross. of
Revolutionary War fame, had Sir Robert's Coat-of-Arms painted. It is believed that this
Cross family came from the Charlinge Crosses at Charlinge, Co. Somerset, England.
Rev. W.R. Bell, rector of Charlinge, spent several years studying the Cross records and
believes that our Cross family came from the Charlinge family. If this is so, then the
ancestry for Robert Cross, as given by Elmer E. Butler in his "Butlers and Kinfolk," is as
follows:

"John Cross, Esq, de Charlinge and Sutton, married Angard, Daughter of Ellis de
Overliegh, near Chester. He was the father of the famous warrior, Sir Robert Cross."
"John Crosse, Esq., of Charlinge, and Sutton, married Constance, daughter of
William Boteler, or Butler, Esq., of Warrington in County of Lancaster.

"William Cross, Esq., de Charlinge and Sutton, married Isabelle, daughter of Robert de
Holme, Lord de Franmure in Cdounty of Palatine and Chester.

"Elinor Cotgreave married Sir William de Charlinge, County of Somerset and Sutton,
Co. Cheshire.

"Sir Renulf Cotgreave, Lord of Hargrave Tarvin and Hattenhall in County of Palatine and
Chester, in reign of Henry IV and Henry V (1399-1422) married Elinor, daughter of Sir
Francis Gamville de Mollington."

Roselle Thoedore Cross, in his 1913 compilation of "My Children's Ancestors" p. 41,
seems to be the first to state that Robert was the son of Thomas Cross. The Durkee
Society tends to believe that Sir Robert's father was Thomas Cross. That society states
that both were born in Denham, England. I leave it as is unless and until further
information is found. Researchers in the Boston Transcript did not appear to even
mention who Robert's father was. They did, however, refer to the research of Rev. Bell
who believed Sir Robert to be of the Charlinge family. A. E. Goodman, in his "Goodman,
A Family History" uses deductive reasoning to come to the conclusion that Robert's
ancestry is as above and that he was from Charlinge, not Denham. He relates the
following:

William Crosse of Charlenge, according to his own statement in his will, dated 2 Mar
1583 had: Robert, Francis, William, Charles, John, Edward and Andrew and four
daughters; Elizabeth, Agnes, Alice, Mary. Edward and Andrew were under 21 years of
age in 1583. Goodman claims that John, under 21 in 1583, was the father of Sir Robert.
"This would eliminate one generation of John Crosses in the above, as this John was
the son of William, not another John."

According to Goodman, John became a sea captain and sailed between Ipswich,
England and Ipswich, Massachusetts, thus the claim that it would have been this John
Cross and not any ot the other brothers who was the father of Robert Cross Sr. who
was is Ipswich, Mass in 1635.

Several different dates are given for the death of Robert Cross, Sr. No sources or
suggestions for the 1670 dates are known. Since Robert Cross, Sr. deposed on 5 Dec
1693, and the case was tried first in May of 1694 and then appealed to a higher court in
Apr 1695, with no indication that Robert had died, and since in Apr 1695, he delcared
himself "the ancientest man and first Proprietor that ever lived on the south side of
Chebacco river." if would appear that he was still alive in April of 1695. He was
supposed to have been
70 years old in 1670 and, according to the NEHGS article of April, 1914 (Vol. 68, p. 202)
he was supposed to be 83 in 1695. There appears to be an error in either someones
subtraction or in his date of birth.

"Mary CROSS was born on 14 Jun 1640 in Ipswich, Massachusetts Bay Colony.
(2130)(2131) Mary was "from Salem" She moved between 1693 and 1710 to Preston,
New London, CT.(2132) She likely lived with her son Stephen. She died after 1710 in
Preston, New London, CT. (79)(2133) Parents: Robert CROSS and Ann (Hannah)
JORDON.
She married to Ephraim HERRICK on 3 Jul 1661 in Ipswich, Essex, MA.(2134) (2135)
(2136)(2137) (2138)(2139) Cross (734) says they were married in Beverly. He settled
on a farm given to him by his father at Birch Plain in Beverly, MA and "took oath of
freeman" on 29 April 1668 (23). Children were: John HERRICK , Ephraim HERRICK,
Mary HERRICK , Stephen HERRICK, Sarah HERRICK , Samuel HERRICK, Timothy
HERRICK , Anna HERRICK.

Robert CROSS was born on 26 Jun 1613 in Charlinch, Somersetshire, England. (2151)
He was christened on 26 Jun 1613 in Charlinch, Somersetshire, England.(2152) He
emigrated on 24 May 1634 to Ipswich, Massachusetts Bay Colony. (2153)(2154) Came
on the Mary and John, which left Southampton, England 24 Mar 1633/34. He was
accompanied by his soon-to-be bridge Anna JORDAN and her parents Stephen and
Susanna JORDAN. He Granted six acres of land adjoining that of his father-in-law
Stephen Jordan in 1635 in Ipswich, Essex, MA. (2155)(2156) He served as a soldier in
1637 in Pequot Indian War (1637). (2157)(2158) (2159)(2160) He Granted a small lot of
marshland for his services in the war in 1639 in Ipswich, Massachusetts Bay
Colony.(2161) (2162) He appeared in court in 1649. (2163) Robert believed that the
magistrates were against him and in the is year he was admonished for his word. He
moved on 19 Mar 1649/50 to Chebacco (later southern Ipswich), Massachusetts Bay
Colony. (2164)(2165) He moved to a 40 acres farm purchased from John Burnham,
whom he later brought suit. He appeared in court in 1657.(2166) In this year, Stephen
JORDAN and Robert CROSS were both sued by Gov....... Bradstreet. He had previously
entrusted them with the care of 30 sheep. Their care seems to have been taken over by
the sons of Robert who were careless and may have allowed the death of many of the
sheep. He took the oath of a freeman in 1658 in Ipswich, Massachusetts Bay
Colony.(2167) (2168) He appeared in court in 1663.(2169) Robert was further
embittered with the magistrates when two of his sons were jailed and set in stocks for
training day misbehavior that Robert called "nothing." He appeared in court in
1664.(2170) (2171) Cross was not happy with Martha because she had developed a
relationship with William Durkee. Martha left home to live with her sister Elizabeth.
Elizabeth consulted Goodman Story, who advised Cross told her Robert that Martha
was in a sorrowful condition to and advised him to permit her to marry. Cross not only
disapproved but sued William Durkee for abusing his daughter. Durkee counter sued
that Cross had withdrawn his consent after giving it. Whatever the result of the suits,
William and Martha married anyway. He Slave or indentured servant owner Owned 2
servants, N. Vauden & L. Clinton. Vauden was fined £40, branded/collared for running
away. about 1670 in Ipswich, Essex, MA. (2172) According to Cross (617), "Robert
Cross had two bound servants, Nicholas Vauden and Lawrence Clinton. Vauden ran
away several times, each time being pursued, captured and returned, and in 1670 he
was fined 40 pounds, branded on the forehead and forced to wear a collar. Clinton
married an aging spinster who bought off his remaining time. Her family sued Cross,
saying that he had connived with Clinton to get her money. They won the case but when
Cross appealed he matter he won the review. Clinton meanwhile departed happily to
Rhode Island and Connecticut for greener pastures!!" He appeared in court before
1685.(2173) He successfully sued Thomas Wells for slander after Wells called Cross
a "cheating knave." He appeared in court in Jun 1693 in Ipswich, Essex, MA.(2174)
(2175) According to Guilford (617), Robert CROSS Sr had purchased 40 acres of
farmland from John BURMAN Jr. The bounds became disputed and, following several
disputes, CROSS sued BURMAN and for neighbors for trespass and "the recovery of 30
acres of land at Ipswich." Robert won, the case was appealed, and the sentence was
upheld. He appeared in court in May 1694 in Boston, Suffolk, MA.(2176) According to
Guilford (617), John BURMAN Jr appealed the suit he lost to Robert CROSS concerning
ownership of 30 acres of land at Ipswich but the case was upheld. He died between
May 1694 and 4 Dec 1710 in Ipswich, Essex, MA.(2177) (2178) (2179) There is no
doubt that Robert CROSS lived to a good old age, but whereas Cross (734) says he
died 8 feb 1692/93, Giulford (617) says that in court in either 1693 or 1694, he testified
that "I am the ancientest man of the first proprietor that ever lived on the south side of
the Chebacco River." He Cross bcame "paranoid" that the Ipswich court was acting
unfairly agasit him. in Ipswich, Essex, MA. (2180) According to Guilford (617), over the
years, Cross had several run ins with the Ipswich court and believed that he was
mistreated: fined necessarily, that the authorities were keeping the court fees, and that
his sons were 'set in stocks and punished for nothing." Parents: John CROSS and Ann.

He married to Ann (Hannah) JORDON on 20 Aug 1635 in Ipswich, Massachusetts Bay
Colony. (2181)(2182) (2183) (2184) Citation is for location only. Stearns (674) has quite
different infortmation regarding the wives of Robert CROSS: he married first wife
unbknown and second Martha TREADWELL (daughter of Thomas) 19 Feb 1665.
Stearns also list children and birthdates being born between 1658 and 1678. Children
were: Elizabeth CROSS, Mary CROSS, Robert CROSS, Martha CROSS, John CROSS,
Stephen CROSS, Anna CROSS, Peter CROSS, George CROSS, Nathaniel CROSS,
Sarah CROSS, Ralph CROSS, Jonathan CROSS.
He married to Mary after 1677. (2185)"
