"2. Maj. JOSEPH CROSHAW (Raleigh-1), born about 1612, probably was educated
in England and had legal training, for he appeared often as attorney in the county
court. A pronounced Royalist, he had no love for Oliver Cromwell and his objection
to the succession of Richard Cromwell, 1659/60, when serving as a member of
the House of Burgesses from York County, brought about his suspension by
Governor Mathews from his office as justice of York County, 6 July 1659. He
represented York County in the Assembly, 1656, 1659 and 1660, and was sheriff,
1656.

"The first of Maj. Croshaw's many patents for land was that for 600 acres in
Charles River (York) County, 9 Aug. 1637. In an Act of Assembly, 6 Jan. 163940, he
was appointed a tobacco viewer for the western side of Queen's Creek. On 27 Feb.
1649/50 he patented 1350 acres on the south side of York River (which later fell
into New Kent County) and on 10 Dec. 1651, 1000 acres at 'Poplar Neck,' across
from land of Richard Croshaw. The will of Maj. Joseph Croshaw, 10 April 1667-24
July 1667, mentioned wife Mary, infant son Joseph, and sons-in-law John West
and Ralph Graves.

"He married (1) _____, (2) Mrs. ------- Finch, who had a daughter Elizabeth or Betty
Finch, (3), between 24 May 1660 and 24 July 1660 Mrs Anne Hodges, buried 20
July 1663, widow of Augustine Hodges, who had a daughter Jane Bignall, (4) Mrs.
Margaret Tucker, left will 3 Oct. 1664-24April 1665, buried 30 Sept. 1664, widow of
Daniel Tucker, who had a daughter Dorothy Tucker, and (5) Mrs. Mary Bromfeild,
widow of Thomas Bromfeild, who had a daughter Ann Bromfeild. The last Mrs.
Croshaw married (2) [sic--Joseph Croshaw was #2, so this should be (3)],
marriage contract 27 Feb 1671/2, Clement Marsh, and died before 28 May 1673
when administration on her estate was grantead to Col. John West 'on the Behalfe
of the Orphants of Major Croshaw.'

"Issue: (by 1) 5. (DAUGHTER) 6. MARY; 7. UNITY; 8. RACHEL; 9. Benjamin, died
without issue; 10. Joseph, died without issue, who with Benjamin was given a
stock of bees by their Godfather, John Broch, 8 June 1646; (by 5) 11. Joseph,
second of the name, died 28 Aug. 1682, aged about 15 years and 8 months,
whereupon the bulk of this father's estate, devised to him with reversion to Maj.
John West if he did not live to the age of 24, passed into West ownership." (APP,

According to Marlyn Lewis (email 97-14-12, Subj: Re: CROSHAW) his first wife
was Ursula Daniels, although his source is unknown. A pedigree for her is
presented in the aforementioned email."

"Captain Raleigh Croshaw (1584 - 1624) was an Ancient planter and a
representative in the House of Burgesses for Elizabeth City County in the Colony
and Dominion of Virginia. He was the only son of Joseph Croshaw.
Crowshaw was born in 1570 in Croshaw, Lancashire, England . He arrived in
Jamestown, Virginia on the "Mary & Margrett", with the Second Supply in 1608. His
wife came over on the "Bona Nova" in 1620 but, as she is not mentioned in 1623
Census, she was likely dead by 1623. He was a member of the Virginia Company
of London in 1609 and is still listed as an adventurer in the Company in both 1618
and 1620. He was one of the authors of the complimentary verses prefixed to "The
General History of Virginia, New England, and the Summer Isles" (1624) of John
Smith of Jamestown.
Raleigh Croshaw was the local official in the Elizabeth City area. This settlement
later became known as the Middle Plantation and later Williamsburg, Virginia.
Croshaw was mentioned as being a member of the group with Captain John
Smith in January 1609, who while attempting to trade for corn with the Indians at
Opechancanough village were almost overcome by surprise. This attack was
thwarted in part by Raleigh Croshaw's quick reactions. Raleigh Croshaw then
made a night trip back to Jamestown which helped to avoid further treachery. He
appears to have been a very skilled Indian fighter.
At the time of the massacre in March of 1622, he was on a trading cruise on the
Potomac . According to Captain John Smith's General History, Croshaw
challenged the chief Opchanacanough or any of his warriors to fight him naked
(without armor), an offer that was not accepted. When Captain John Smith
published his General History in 1624, one of the verses in Volume III of the book
had been written by Croshaw -- and in his writing, John Smith implies a high
opinion of Croshaw's knowledge of Indians and their way of making war.
Raleigh Croshaw accompanied Claiborne on his explorations and, with just a few
men, successfully defended a remote trading outpost up on the Potomac River in
the 1622 attack. Captain Raleigh Croshaw was in the Potomac River trading in a
small bark, commanded by Captain Spilman. There an Indian stole aboard and
told them of the massacre, (1622) and that Opchanacanough had been practicing
with his King and Country to betray them, which they refused to do, but that the
Indians of Werowocomoco had undertaken it. Captain Spilman went there, but the
Indians after seeing that his men were so vigilant and well armed, suspected that
they had been discovered, therefore, to delude him, they gave him (so) such good
deals in trade, that his vessel was soon nearly overloaded.
About 1623 a patent was issued to "Captain Raleigh Croshaw, Gentleman, of
Kiccoughtan, ?An Ancient Planter who hath remained in this country 15 years
complete and performed many a worthy service to the Colony," for 500 acres by
Old Point Comfort. This was based on his transporting himself, his servant and
his wife in addition to adventuring 25 pounds sterling in the Company.
By the following year he was a burgess for Elizabeth City. In March of 1624 he was
issued a commission to trade with the Indians for corn. On this voyage he
purchased a "great canoe" for 10,000 blue beads. The Corporation of Elizabeth
City states that ?Captain Raleigh Croshaw planted by Patent 500 acres (2 km²)
between Fox Hill and the Pamunkey River to establish Elizabeth City.? Captain
Raleigh Croshaw was last referred to on November 22, 1624. On December 27,
1624, Captain Francis West was instructed to take an inventory of his estate.

Some researchers have taken the above as evidence of Raleigh's death but not
so. He departed for England in December 1624, not returning until the summer of
1626. With him came his wife and sons Joseph, Benjamin and Benjamin. His
brother William came to care for Raleigh's plantation at Kiccoughtan so Raleigh
could take care of family affairs in England.

"1. Capt. RALEIGH CROSHAW, Gent., came to Jamestown in the Second Supply
the latter part of Sept. 1608. He was probably a member of the family of Crashaw
of Crashaw, Lancashire, in which the name Richard was common and which had
branches at Bentley and Dodsworth in Yorkshire. If such be the case, he was a
relative of the Rev. William Crashaw, B.D. (1572-1626), who was born near
Sheffield, Yorkshire, and whose eloquent sermon on the colonization of Virginia
has been so often quoted, and of the latter' son, Richard Crashaw (1613-1649),
the Roman Catholic priest and mystic poet.

"Capt. Croshaw was the author of one of the complimentary verses prefixed to
Capt. John Smith's General History, 1624, and the latter seems to have had a high
oopinion of his knowledge of Indians and Indian warfare. When the massacre of
1622/3 occurred, Croshaw wass on a trading cruise on the Potomac and at once

"Capt. Croshaw was alive 22 Nov. 1624 but dead by 27 Dec. 1624 when Capt.
Francis West, as administrator of Capt. Croshaw's estate, was ordered to take an
inventory. There are other references to the estate as late as 9 Feb. 1628/9, but
neither widow nor orphans are mentioned. As they do not appear in the census of
1623/4 or the muster of 1624/5, the probability is that they had returned to England.
